While midcentury actor unions worked within the entertainment industry for equitable access to opportunity for professional actors, the massive expansion of educational theater programs that boomed in high schools, universities and pre-professional training programs in the post-World War II era exerted an even more substantial influence on the idea that the casting process should be fair. Yet, in the 1940s and 1950s, no consensus existed among theatre educators about how to balance the competing priorities of fairness, efficiency and quality when assigning roles in a school or community setting.
He continued, "So I did an audition where I had to sing, and it was pretty bad. It's one of those auditions that was so bad that I look back and I think, 'What if that tape surfaces at some point? That'll be the death of me.' Yeah. That was pretty awful."

Apparently everyone is an expert at which audition songs will land a performer a job and which should be avoided. For a variety of reasons, many stage, music and casting directors advise being wary of songs by Stephen Sondheim for auditions.
In the future, have a think about where your scripts come from, and find ways to support and respect the artists who write them. Did you use a great scene by a playwright for that audition you nailed? Consider buying some of their work online! Do you have a favourite book of monologues or scenes you swear by for auditions? Get it as a gift for an actor friend! Our best advice is to pay it forward when you can.
Performance Notes: This scene suggests a rich and complex backstory between these two characters, as well as a larger world than what exists on these few pages. Sadly, this is not the case: the story of Sally and Ryan begins and ends in this scene and does not spill into some larger story.
